Stay Spiritually Minded Through Divorce

Salli's Divorce Support Blog

I enjoy speaking at Single Adult events and women's conferences regularly. One of the reasons is because I meet so many wonderful people, who love the Lord, and I learn so much from them.

At a women's conference, awhile back, I was asked to speak on the topic of "Becoming Spiritually Prepared". As I organized my thoughts in preparation for the occasion, I felt inclined to teach the concept that smiling more often will draw us closer to the Lord and aid us in becoming more devoutly centered in His ways.

After my talk was finished that day, a really cute, young woman came up to talk to me. She was almost breathless when she said, "My husband and I agree that smiling is far more important to the Lord than we can ever imagine." At that point she took out a piece of paper on which she had written these words: "spiritually minded is life eternal" (2 Nephi 9:39).

"Look!" she said. "The first letter of each word in this sentence spells out the word, 'Smile'! My husband found it one day when he was pondering this verse."

"Wow!" I said, "That's really cool! It's kinda like a hidden treasure!"

"Yes!" she said. "We've talked about it a lot and we feel that smiling--whether we feel like it or not--is a way of saying 'thank you' to the Lord."

"...Because in nothing do we offend God, but in our ingratitude," I said, thoughtfully, referring to D&C 59:21.

"Exactly!"  said the young woman, who let me keep the piece of paper which I placed in my scriptures. I'm grateful that the young woman shared her discovery with me that day, because it continues to inspire me.

So my message to you today, if you want to stay close to the Lord during divorce, is just a reminder to smile.

It's important to the Lord for us to be spiritually minded and, evidently, smiling aids in that process!
