The Master Silversmith

Salli's Divorce Support Blog

By now you should know that nearly eight years ago, as a mid-life, divorced, single lady I met my new husband on the, to be exact. We married quickly when we realized the Lord was encouraging us, and that is only the beginning of a great and wonderful story.

But I must say that moving to the freezing temperatures of Madison, Wisconsin from my comfy nest in Portland was not an easy experience for me. Though I was finally in love in a reciprocol and supportive relationship with a wonderful man--Ken, I was still over a thousand miles from my family, friends and all that was familiar to me. I often described myself as Dorothy in the Land of Oz!

I turned to the Lord at that point, as I always have, and asked Him what I should do with myself. His response was as it should be, "Bloom where you're planted. I've brought you here for a wise purpose. In a 'little while' you'll return home again." I believed Him.

I've always loved the analogy of the Lord being the Master Silversmith. He works us (his precious metals) in the fiery furnace just long enough to strengthen and refine us. And when does He know when to remove us from the heated furnace of affliction?

When He can see His image reflected in our countenance!

So, I blossomed in Madison knowing the Lord had a purpose in bringing me there. I was called into the stake Relief Society presidency four months after I arrived and, a year and a half later, I was called as the president. What a blessing to serve the Sisters in the Madison Wisconsin Stake!

And that's just a smidgeon of what happened while I was there!

I lived in Wisconsin for four years until Ken retired and we moved, together, back to Portland. We've been very happy all the years we've been together, but our time in Portland has been the happiest of all.

And can you believe it? We've been back longer than I was away!

Point being....Even our trials and challenges eventually pass away. Someday the sorrow of your divorce will feel like a book you read a long time ago. Past history. You will move on and life will be sweet again!

But you'll be stronger...and wiser...and better because the Lord steeled you through the challenges of your divorce. And though difficult today, trust that He knows what He is working in your life and it will be over before you know it!

And--yes!-- that's true for any difficulty we face!
