Staying smart through divorce means figuring out what makes sense and then taking the next reasonable step.

Oftentimes during emotionally upsetting times, such as going through divorce and all the associated challenges, we feel blindsided by the chaos in our lives which can allow unhealthy or inappropriate behavior patterns to set in. For example, you feel stressed out so you "forget" to take a walk, that day, and sit by the TV with a bag of Oreos. Not a good choice!

What you need is a better outlet for your feelings because repeated negative responses can develop into bad habits--and that's not what you want as you rebuild after divorce.

The standard of behavior you want to develop is to take hold of your feelings so you can successfully face the problems in your life. Break detrimental patterns by talking through your upsetting feelings with someone to vent the negative pressure building inside. Better to have a relationship with a person who can help guide you, than to have a relationship with an unhealthy pattern.

So, dump those Oreos down the garbage disposal and take a walk. You deserve to be amazing at this time in your life!
