A Christmas Gift to Share

Salli's Divorce Support Blog

During this beautiful Christmas Season I want to wish all the LDS Singles a wonderful Christmas! If this is your first Christmas as a single person, just remember, after a divorce it usually takes two complete seasonal rotations before you feel anchored and collected again in body, mind, and spirit.

Feeling a bit disconnected, lonely, depressed and discouraged is normal for this time of year. Good days are ahead for you, though! I promise!

In the meantime, here’s a plan: no matter what your circumstances, find joy in the gift of giving this year. It doesn't have to be something expensive--actually, the opposite is true. Give something that has no monetary value attached to it, yet is priceless: your time and listening ear.

There is nothing as profoundly helpful and validating as a person willing to give the gift of their time as they listen to another person's cares and concerns. You don't have to solve their problems, nor do you have to respond with insightful wisdom—just be there for someone else rather than being the center of the conversation. Encourage them; allow them to be vulnerable, without judgment.

When you give to others in such a way it's actually a very helpful thing to do for you, too! When we give to others in such a selfless manner, we receive a certain joy and peace in return. That compensation is something money cannot buy!

In the New Testament, remember when the Savior admonished Peter to feed his sheep after inquiring if Peter loved him? I’ve often wondered if the Lord—in response to Peter’s declaration of devotion--wasn’t granting Peter the secret to happiness. Perhaps the Lord was saying: “Because you truly love me, I want to give you the means to ensure your happiness forever: Love and serve others!”

Or in other words, “Feed my Sheep”. Enjoy this beautiful Season!
